The Step-by-Step Guide to Getting Your Ontario Driver’s License

guide to getting your Ontario drivers license

Thinking about getting your Ontario driver’s license? Whether you’re a teenager, a newcomer to Canada, or someone returning to driving after a break, Ontario’s graduated licensing system provides a safe and structured pathway. Let’s walk you through each step of the process:

Step 1: Get Your G1 License This is the beginner’s permit. To qualify, you must be at least 16 years old and pass a written knowledge test at a DriveTest centre. This test covers road signs, traffic laws, and safe driving practices based on the Ontario Driver’s Handbook. Once you pass, you receive your G1 license, which comes with restrictions—like driving with a fully licensed driver and no highway driving unless with an instructor.

Step 2: Enroll in a BDE Course Signing up for a Ministry-approved Beginner Driver Education (BDE) course is one of the smartest steps you can take. Our courses at Clinton Driving School include:

  • 20 hours of online coursework

  • 10 hours of at-home assignments

  • 10 to 15 hours of in-vehicle training (depending on package)

Completing a BDE course not only improves your skills but also reduces your G1 waiting period from 12 months to 8 months. Plus, you may qualify for insurance discounts.

Step 3: Pass the G2 Road Test After at least 8 months (with BDE) or 12 months (without), you can take the G2 test. This practical test assesses basic driving skills—turning, lane changes, parking, and safe maneuvering in traffic. We offer mock tests to prepare you for this, and we highly recommend renting one of our school vehicles for the test. Our cars are clean, insured, and familiar to our students, which boosts test-day confidence.

Step 4: Get Your Full G License Once you’ve held your G2 for at least 12 months, you’re eligible for the final G test. This exam is more advanced and includes highway driving, emergency maneuvers, and judgment-based decisions. Our instructors will work with you to fine-tune your skills and prepare you for anything the examiner may throw your way.

Final Tip: From start to finish, Clinton Driving School is here to guide you. Our experienced instructors, flexible scheduling, road test rentals, and student-centered approach make learning to drive a safe, smooth, and rewarding experience.
